God, the Ultimate Therapist

Dear Reader,

I would like to share that I have been in therapy for years (on and off) and my time with my current therapist is coming to an end. It's been years of working with her, and I have come to really trust her and rely on her during my breakdowns and breakthroughs. As this stage of my life comes to an end, I remember all of the different therapists I have had and the many years of therapy that I have partaken in throughout my life. Some therapists I have connected with, others I have not, but through it all I am grateful that I could have a listening ear where I could share my story and begin to heal.

While I really dislike saying goodbye to people, through this process I have learned many valuable things:  While therapy can be good for us and sometimes necessary, God is the only presence that lasts forever, a presence that never changes. I have also come to realize that therapy is not separate from a relationship with God. Before therapy, there is God. While therapy is taking its course, He is there, and after we stop therapy, He continues to be there always. I learned that even though we can be different things to different people, our most cherished and most significant identity is being a child of God. We are His sons and daughters before anything else, and this is enough to propel us into further healing and Truth.  These realizations make therapy helpful but they also put therapy into perspective. It is not the end all be all of our growth and healing. It is a very valuable tool.

Above all, what I discovered is that God is the great listener. Even though we can’t see Him, He is always there reminding us of who we are in Him. With God, everything is possible, and without Him, nothing is. May we look forward to trusting and relying on God for the rest of our lives, may we look forward to growing in relationship with him as that is where true healing begins.
